Lake Bled
The most magical place on earth. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire trip to Slovenia, but Lake Bled (and its surrounding lakes and mountains) was a huge highlight.
Stay in a Berc (a bnb). We stayed at Garni Berc and it was perfect. Quaint room, delicious breakfast, walkable to the lake, free bikes to use whenever, absolutely no wifi, and across the street from one of the most amazing meals we had at Finefood in the Penzion Berc.
In case you’re reading our other Slovenia posts and feel like we say every meal is amazing, they were all pretty delicious but the standouts were: Julja in Ljubljana, Finefood at the Penzion, and Planinska koca na Vojah nestled in the mountains with a view of Triglav (the highest peak in the Julian Alps in Slovenia).
Slovenian food is pretty heavy, but with all of the physical activity you’ll be doing in Lake Bled you’ll want the sustenance and won’t see the calories stick around!
Take advantage of the beautiful outdoors and walk, jog, or bike around the lake. Swim out to the island in the lake where a beautiful church is located. It’s a long swim and technically you’re not allowed to swim up to the church and sit on the island, but you can and it’s so worth it! Not for the feint of heart! You can’t explore the island in a swimsuit so if you want to see the church, make sure to come back on one of the boats. Take in the surroundings of being in a deep gorge and then hike up the mountains around the lake for an absolutely stunning view.
If you have more then 2-3 days, check out Lake Bohinj with a more traditional beach and activities (we rented a stand up paddle board from here). You’ll be surrounded by ridiculously gorgeous views all the way around you and you can drive through Triglav national park and go to the amazing restaurant in the mountains for a meal.
Planning Your Trip
If you’re into nature/hiking/activity, spend the most time in Lake Bled. If you’d prefer a relaxing beach vacation, swap the number of days in Lake Bled and Portoroz.
4 days Lake Bled
2 days Ljubljana
1-2 days Portoroz (or a Croatian or Italian coastal city)
